Starting an e-commerce business in Pakistan has become more accessible as more people shop online, pay digitally and use courier delivery. The steps below give a practical order for planning a first online business.
1. Choose a business model
Most beginners start with one of these models:
- Local marketplace selling — listing products on a Pakistani marketplace such as Daraz.
- Your own online store — selling through your own website and social media pages.
- International marketplaces — selling on platforms such as Amazon, using models like FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) or FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant).
- Dropshipping — selling products that a supplier ships directly to your customer, so you do not hold stock.
- Wholesale and private label — buying stock in bulk, or creating your own branded version of a product.
Each model needs a different amount of capital, time and risk tolerance, so decide this first.
2. Research and validate products
Look for products with steady demand, manageable competition and a margin that still works after platform fees, packaging, delivery and returns. Check marketplace search results, customer reviews and competitor pricing before you buy stock.
3. Find reliable suppliers
Suppliers can be local wholesale markets, manufacturers or importers. Compare at least three options on price, minimum order quantity, quality and delivery time, and order samples before committing to a larger quantity.
4. Work out your numbers
Build a simple profit sheet for every product: purchase cost, shipping, platform commission, packaging, advertising and expected returns. A product that looks profitable on price alone can lose money once every cost is counted.
5. Set up payments, delivery and documents
Many domestic customers in Pakistan prefer cash on delivery, so choose a courier service that supports it and understand its charges. International marketplaces require a way to receive payouts and the identity and business documents the platform asks for. For business or tax registration, check the current requirements with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) or a qualified tax adviser.
6. Create listings that convert
Clear photos, an accurate title, honest descriptions and competitive pricing matter on every platform. Answer the questions a buyer would ask before purchasing.
7. Market, measure and improve
Start with a small budget, track which products and channels bring sales, and improve listings and ads based on real results rather than guesses.
